The Best Bulb for a Touch Lamp: E27, 2700K and Dimmable
A touch lamp is only as good as the bulb in it. The wrong bulb flickers on low, buzzes audibly, or fixes the lamp at one harsh brightness. Three specifications get it right first time.
Match the socket: E27
E27 is the standard large screw fitting used across the UK, Hong Kong and Europe. It is the socket you want, because replacements are stocked by every supermarket and hardware shop and cost very little.
Do not force a B22 bayonet or E14 small screw bulb with an adapter in a touch lamp; a loose fit affects the sensing circuit as well as being unsafe.
Insist on dimmable
The single most common complaint about touch lamps is flicker, and the cause is almost always a non-dimmable LED. Standard LEDs are designed for full power only, so at reduced power their driver stutters.
The packaging must say dimmable. If the lamp buzzes or shimmers on its lowest step after a bulb change, swap the bulb before assuming the lamp is faulty.
Choose 2700K warm white
Colour temperature decides how the room feels. Around 2700K is the warm, slightly golden light of a traditional bulb and is the standard choice for bedrooms. 4000K and above reads as office light and works against winding down.
If you like an even softer look, 2200K extra-warm suits a low night setting, at the cost of being slightly dim for reading.
Get the brightness and wattage right
Aim for roughly 400 lumens at full output — about 6W in LED terms. That is comfortable for reading in bed without lighting the whole room.
Stay within the lamp's stated maximum wattage. Higher-output bulbs generate more heat inside a fabric shade and shorten the life of both the shade and the bulb.
Changing a bulb safely
Unplug the lamp at the socket first — a touch lamp's base is live-sensing and switching it off is not the same as isolating it. Let a used bulb cool, then unscrew it gently while supporting the lamp holder.
Screw the new bulb in until it seats without force, plug the lamp back in, and cycle through all three levels to confirm smooth dimming.

- Almost always a non-dimmable LED bulb. Replace it with a bulb marked dimmable and the flicker usually disappears.
- Can I use a smart bulb in a touch lamp?
- You can, but control it one way only. Using the lamp's touch dimming and the bulb's own dimming together causes flicker and unreliable behaviour.
- What colour temperature is best for sleep?
- 2700K or warmer. Warm light late in the evening is easier on the eyes than cool white and suits a bedtime routine better.
