USB-C Bedside Lamps: What to Check Before You Buy (UK Guide)

A bedside lamp with charging built in removes an adapter, a cable and a socket fight from your nightstand. But the ports are the part most listings describe badly, so here is what to look for in a UK bedroom.

USB-C Bedside Lamps: What to Check Before You Buy (UK Guide)

Check the port pair, not the port count

One USB-A and one USB-C is the useful combination: USB-C for a current phone, USB-A for the older cable that charges earbuds, a watch or a Kindle. Two of the same port sounds generous and is usually less convenient.

Also check both ports work at once. Some lamps share a single circuit and drop to a trickle when the second device goes in.

5V/2A is the number that matters

Most lamp ports deliver 5V/2A — around 10W per port. That charges a phone fully overnight with room to spare, which is the actual job. Treat marketing about fast charging without a stated output as unverified.

If you need 30W+ USB-C PD for a laptop, no bedside lamp will do it. Keep the laptop brick and let the lamp handle the phone.

Do the ports work when the lamp is off?

This is the specification worth insisting on. Charging should be independent of the light, so you can plug in at 11pm, switch the lamp off and still wake to a full battery.

Lamps that cut power with the light are a genuine daily annoyance and the fault is not obvious until you have already lived with it for a week.

UK plugs, voltage and cable length

For a UK bedroom you want a fitted BS 1363 three-pin plug, not a lamp shipped with a travel adapter, and a stated 220–240V input. A cord around 110cm reaches a floor socket beside most beds; below 100cm you will be moving furniture.

Check the plug is a moulded fused plug too — a fuse is what protects the flex, and it is a UK requirement rather than a nice extra.

Bulb socket and shade still decide how it feels

Charging is convenience; comfort comes from the light. An E27 socket keeps replacement bulbs cheap and lets you choose warm white around 2700K, and a linen or fabric shade diffuses the light instead of throwing glare at the pillow.

Around 400 lumens at the top setting is right for reading in bed. Brighter is not better in a room you are trying to fall asleep in.

Frequently asked questions

Is USB-C on a lamp as fast as a wall charger?
For a phone charging overnight, effectively yes at 5V/2A. For a device that needs USB-C Power Delivery, no — use its own charger.
Can I charge a laptop from a bedside lamp?
No. Lamp ports are around 10W; laptops typically need 45W or more.
Do I need a dimmable bulb?
Yes, if the lamp dims. A non-dimmable LED can flicker or buzz on lower touch settings.

The Caza Touch Lamp has USB-A + USB-C at 5V/2A, a fitted UK plug, a 110cm cord and an E27 socket.
